Staying Safe On Your Watercraft and Seadoo
Safety and boats is something that everyone who takes part in water activities should know about. Even if you are not operating the vessel, whether it is large or small, you should be aware of the precautions you should take while in the vessel, as well as what you should do in case of emergency. If you are introducing your family to watercraft, make sure you educate them on boating safety before they go out on the water.
The most important element in water safety is the availability and correct usage of a life jacket. There must be one life jacket per person on all watercraft. On smaller watercraft, everyone should wear a life jacket at all times, these types of water craft include sailboats, canoes, kayaks, Seadoos, motor boats, etc. On larger boats such as cruise ships or ferries it is not so important to wear your life jacket at all times. In those cases it is important that you know where to find a life jacket if one is needed.
Alcohol and boats are like alcohol and motor vehicles – they never mix. It is important never to operate a watercraft under the influence of alcohol. Not only is it illegal, it is extremely risky. The number one cause of boating accident deaths in California is alcohol.
Another safety tip that might not be obvious to recreational boaters is to always make sure you know where you are going, how long you will be out, and make sure to inform someone of your plan. This is common practice with the operation of commercial vessels, but it just makes sense that you get in the habit of always having someone know where you should be and when you should be back. That way, if you get in trouble, you have the best chances of being found as soon as possible, rather than having no one realize you were missing until too late, or not know where to start looking for you.
The law requires that a number of items be always carried on certain watercraft. These items include such things as a light, a whistle or other noise maker, and a bailer. For a full list of the legal requirement contact the coast guard. In addition to these items I recommend that you bring some fresh water, a sun hat, sun screen, and depending upon the duration of the trip some food. It is always better to be safe than to be sorry.
It doesn’t matter what size of boat you will be sailing on, or even if you are going out on a windsurfer. Make sure that you meet all the legally required safety procedures and items, and then use your common sense to add some extra security measures. Keeping you and your family safe on the water ensures that your summer, holidays, and relaxation time at the lake or ocean will be filled with fun memories.
