River Activities In Ottawa If You Rent Close To The Rideau Canal
Living in Ottawa has many advantages. Ottawa, Ontario is perfectly located at the junction of three major rivers. These rivers include the Gatineau River, the Ottawa River, and the Rideau River. With the addition of the Rideau Canal which snakes through the heart of of the city, Ottawa has plenty of picturesque waterfront parks and pathways. These parks and pathways lend themselves to all sorts of pleasant activities.
The Ottawa River runs west-east across the top of the city. This river acts as the border between Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec and runs towards the Saint Lawrence River. There are a number of bridges connecting the two cities. The Gatineau River flows southerly through western Quebec and meets and empties into the Ottawa River in central Ottawa. The Rideau River branches off the Ottawa River and runs south towards Lake Ontario
Sailing is a very popular sport on the Ottawa River. There are several clubs along the river in the Ottawa vicinity, but because you can not navigate the Ottawa River through Ottawa, some of these clubs are separated and the boats sail in their own respective waters. The two most popular clubs are at the West end of the city, and are the Brittania Yacht Club – the oldest of the two and most typical of an old private sailing club, and the Nepean Sailing Club, which was originally a city run establishment, but has since turned into a private members only club.
If you sail from either of these clubs, you have access to a large wide area of the Ottawa river called Lake Deschennes. If you travel West you have a 27 mile section of water travelling to the Chat Falls hydro electric dam near the small town of Fitzroy Harbour. To the East you will find a series of rapids, separating this part of the Ottawa River from the section travelling through Ottawa. There are many pleasure sailors, as well as club racers who use this section of the river, and at times it can get quite crowded.
If you prefer not to have to use your sea-legs, then one of the many other activities centering around the rivers around Ottawa may be more your speed. There are hundreds of miles of walking and bicycling paths along all three rivers, where you will find walkers, joggers, cyclists and rollerbladers. There are also many parks and several beaches along the rivers, where you can go for picnics or one of the many festivals held at these parks through out the year. Sightseeing tours are also very popular, and you can find tour boats offering cruises along the Ottawa River as well as the Rideau Canal.
You will find tons of things to occupy your time if you are renting in Ottawa, but living near the Canal and rivers means you have that many more activities to take part in. Finding a house for rent in Ottawa that is close to the Canal will make your time infinitely more enjoyable.
