Practice Dog Safety While Boating

Does your canine tag along with you wherever you go?  For lots of dog owners, their pooch is a part of their family and that means the dog goes where they go, even if it’s on their motorcycle, in their tent and of course on their boat. However, boating can be quite dangerous for your dog, although at face value, it’s a safe and fun activity. Here are a few tips for your dog’s safety, to practice while boating.

It is indispensable to have life jackets. The sad truth is that many dogs drown each when they shouldn’t have, although this may seem like an obvious statement. Your beloved dog might not tell you even if he could because he wants to please you, but he can’t let you know when he’s getting tired . A well fitting life jacket could make the difference between life and death.

From tiny toy dog size to Great Dane size, life jackets for dogs come in every size imaginable. Be sure at least two clasps go around your dog’s torso and at least one around the neck so the jacket will stay snug. To enable you to pull your dog back onto the boat, it helps to also have handles on the back.

Make sure your dog favors the water and can swim. Not all dogs are able to swim, despite common belief. Have you ever seen a bulldog in the water? They are like a sinking brick. There are many other breeds that can’t swim, and some don’t enjoy being in water.

Gradually introduce your dog to the idea of boating. Boats move, which can be disconcerting to a dog and they may also not like the concept of wearing a life jacket. Prior to introducing them to the boat, let them wear their life jacket at home, and give them treats. The first time you take your dog on the boat, don’t depart from the shore. They should get used to the movement of the boat on the water, so just let them run around on board.

Take ample fresh water. You dog will get thirsty from the sun and fresh air, not to mention the exercise. Discourage your dog from drinking from the lake by having ample clean water. Waters polluted with Blue-Green algae is toxic , so it is very hazardous to your dog.

Be sure to pay attention to both the temperature of the air and the water. Just like humans, canines can die from hypothermia if their body temperatures become too low and they become hypothermic. And just like the air temperature being too cold , it can be too hot as well. Some dogs can sunburn and it’s important if you’re out on a hot and sunny day to make sure they have a place to avoid the sun’s strong rays. A dog having light skin and short hair should have sunscreen applied .

Consider a few other safety issues about boating with your dog

Where will your dog potty? A designated place to go to the bathroom on the boat will be needed if your are not going back and forth to shore. A first aid kit for your dog should be taken, just in case. Last, be sure your dog stays out of the path of other boats or watercraft. A brightly colored PFD may help other boats notice your dog in the water but it’s not worth the risk .

It is feasible to take your dog with you when you’re on your boat. A few precautions, a little extra time to ensure they’re comfortable on the boat and on the water and a bit of planning go a long way. You can keep your dog safe while boating. Have a great time!
