Hi Ho and a Bottle of Rum

The beautiful thing about wine is that it can be enjoyed almost anywhere. On your sofa at home, in your garden in the evening, or on the top of a mountain. Wine can even be enjoyed on the oceans around the world, but here you need a little consideration as it can be trickier than you might imagine.

Keeping it chilled. When it comes to the temperature of wine, its fine to serve red at room temp without chilling it at all. White wine or champagne on the other hand should be served chilled and this poses a problem if you don’t have a fridge on board. A great tip however is to use nature’s chiller and stick the bottles in the sea. Just place them in a secure net and dunk them in the water 30 minutes before you want to drink them. The temp of the sea does of course depend on where you are, but in most places it will be cold enough.

Preventing breakages
. One of the biggest challenges when drinking wine out at sea is keep the bottles safe when the boat is moving about lots.Keeping the wine in a box and securing this tightly to one part of the boat is a great start, but there is more you can do to save your bottles. If you place your wines in wine bags then this will protect them further and stop any liquid escaping if the bottles do break.

Getting the cork out
. Most people christen a boat by breaking a bottle over its hull, although you don’t actually get to drink much of it opening it this way. Corks swell when they get wet so make sure it doesn’t come into contact with water as it will make getting it out a great deal more difficult. Also, don’t try to remove the cork by improvising with all manner of tableware or fishing hooks. Use a decent bottle opener and take your time. If you ruin this bottle, you may have a bit of a swim to get another.
